DEVELOPMENT ON THE RISE
According to a joint study by the
American Seniors Housing Association and the National Investment
Center for the Seniors Housing & Care Industries, some
32,184 units of market-rate housing for seniors is now in various
stages of development at 219 sites nationwide -- a 12 percent gain
over last year. But the tally is still less than 50 percent of what
was built during the boom year of 1999, the study found. Still,
affordable housing projects for seniors continue to receive a major
influx of funding from state and federal government initiatives,
including $1.8 billion in mortgages from HUD for senior-care
facilities, and various Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac
programs.
